You are invited to a pirate ship leaving for the Ogasawara Islands.
When pirates signal other ships at sea, they proudly deny allegiance to any state, declaring, “We are from the sea!”
The high seas are stateless, and in the absence of any territorial sovereignty, they are common to all countries. They are recognized for the freedom of navigation and are not fragmented by boundaries of nationality, ethnicity, or citizenship. There are pirates imagining a new order on the high seas, a realm free from any state's jurisdiction.
Thirty years have passed since the invention of the World Wide Web. This virtual space has long been conceived of as an open commons, often compared to the seas(trans-boundary waters). However, as of 2021, it is now divided into a Chinese sphere that is controlled and under surveillance, and an American sphere centered around global corporations. In addition, the national and individual reactions witnessed during the outbreak and spread of COVID-19 have revealed the firm boundaries drawn between peoples and countries. We are now left wondering whether such a world, where everyone is connected, was merely an illusion all along.
Nevertheless, we once again plan a voyage to dive into the high seas. In the course of this voyage, we use temporary occupations, gaps, infiltrations, and declarations as our fuel to dispel the boundaries that have divided us and draw a new map through alternative connections. Our voyage is an autonomic escape from fixed and exclusive borders, a declaration of a non-place realm that suspends the state of trans-boundary. It doesn't matter where we depart from or where we arrive. Our ship explores a sea that belongs to none, connecting points online and offline according to the contours generated by the tides of the high seas.
You can expect to participate in attempts to navigate 'other' connections as part of our crew, pirates disturbing boundaries, rather than as subjects subsumed by nations and borders.
